Neste Oil wins the prize for worst company
| The Finnish company active in oil was given "the price of shame" yesterday in Geneva


 

The biofuel producing company Neste Oil has received the Audience Award Public Eye Awards 2011 that "reward" the worst company of the year in environmental and social responsibility. Based on an online vote conducted in January this year, 17,385 people have elected the national oil company of Finland. The latter precedes BP (2e) and Philip Morris third.

Surrounded by Greenpeace activists dressed as orang-utans, the senior vice president and head of the sustainable development of society, Simo Honkanen, came yesterday to receive the prize in person. "We are disappointed because we think it does not reflect reality. We are one of most responsible companies in terms of sustainable development in the global energy industry, "he said.  

Co-organizer of the price, the Berne Declaration accuses the company of playing a major role in deforestation in Malaysia and Indonesia, threatening local people and many animals, selling across Europe's oil-based biodiesel palm as the "Green Diesel".

Following this award, the airline Finnair has waived forge a partnership with Neste Oil said his side Mirjiam Koop, of Greenpeace. "This demonstrates that our action has an impact on business activities, " she added.
